We've all said it: "There's just not enough time in a day." It's possible, however, that we just need to change the way we do things to allow ourselves enough time and energy to complete all the necessary tasks. Here are some habits and tips of productive people that may help you:
Prioritize
Start each day by making a to-do list. At the very top, place what you absolutely must do that day. Tackle that item first and then move to other things that have less of a time-crunch.
Have your own uniform
What you are wearing can have a big affect on how you feel. Some people work best when they choose a simple uniform to wear every day, like all black or always donning a blazer and pants. Others like to mix it up, going for colorful, interesting outfits on days they feel energetic and opting for more laid-back causal looks when their mood calls for it. Whatever your method, consider setting your clothes out the night before work to cut back on the time it takes to get ready in the morning. Use those extra minutes to slowly sip your coffee or take the dog for a stroll and relax before beginning your busy day.
Reach out
If you have a question, ask it. When you read a particularly great article, reach out to the author to tell them what you enjoyed about it and potentially make a valuable connection for your career. Are you wondering why you haven't gotten a raise? Speak up and talk to your supervisor. It is necessary to ask for help when you need it and to network among colleagues. This allows you to make strides towards forming new relationships and even take a step on a project that required some guidance. If you aren't sure if your question is a good one to ask, exhaust other sources (like colleagues or potentially the Internet) in the hopes of finding an answer before asking the person. This way you know it wasn't an obvious answer that you could have come to on your own. Productivity requires growth, and reaching out is an important move.
Don't wait until you're ready
Procrastinating starts when you think, "Eh, I'm not quite ready." Avoid this by jumping into tasks whether you are sure where to start or not. You need to create a first round or draft in order to get a start and work towards a final product. Only then can you edit or change what has been created to make it better and have a high-quality final product. Sitting around worrying about something won't help. Instead, dive straight into what you need to do and then ask for assistance or clarification if you need it.
Get organized
When your physical space is uncluttered you will likely find it is much easier to focus. This, in turn, can make you more productive. Spend a few moments at the end of each day tidying up your desk so it will be clean and ready for you when you return in the morning. Use a calendar to keep track of important dates and meetings so you can easily remember when you need to be somewhere. If you need to file something, don't let it sit on your desk for days – do it right away. Keep things you don't use off of your desk and out of your office. This is an area with functionality in mind, and if something in it is not serving a purpose it is only adding to clutter and distraction.
