Make the most out of networking events

Networking is a vital part of moving up the career ladder, regardless of what field you’re in. One of the easiest ways to promote yourself is at industry networking events. These opportunities are organized for you to meet others in your line of work, and establish new business connections. It can be overwhelming to meet so many new people, but if done properly, it can significantly impact your career path for the better. Here are four things to keep in mind at the next networking event you attend:

1. Do your homework
A lot of events offer some information as to who will be attending. Some events even promote attending individuals who are leaders in the industry. Do yourself a favor and do a little research on people you are trying to meet and impress. Getting an idea for an individual’s background can be extremely helpful in making small talk and continuing a conversation. In the same vein, take the time to make sure you’re up on the latest industry news. Not only will it show that you’re knowledgeable, but it will show you care about the line of work you’re in.

2. Make a goal for yourself
There’s plenty you stand to gain from a networking event. Whether it’s finding a new position or establishing a new contact, you can get a lot out of them.. That said, you should take the time to think about what you want to accomplish personally while there. Come up with a reasonable goal, and keep that in mind as you make your way through the event. When you’re planning who you want to meet (it can be an individual or a company), try to choose people who will help you achieve your goal.

3. Find common ground
People are more likely to help you if they like you. And one of the best ways to form a relationship with someone new is to find a little common ground. Maybe you both went to the same university or are from the same area of the country. It doesn’t even have to be work-related. If you both are football fans, you probably have plenty to talk about, which only strengthens the bond you’ll make.

4. Dress the part
It’s important to look professional at events like these. If the event doesn’t call for formal attire, at least dress in business casual. It’s a good rule of thumb to dress for the job you want, not necessarily the one you have currently. Dressing professionally goes a long way in making a good first impression.
