How to make your desk the most fun spot in the office

December 10, 2014

It's no secret that we all spend a lot of time at work, so wouldn't you want to make the most of those hours by creating a desk that fosters creativity and inspires you? Office desks can be productive and fun at the same time. Decorate your space with any of these ideas:

Clean it up
First things first: Remove any clutter that may be taking up space on your desk. It's hard to be productive if your work area is covered in a mess of paper and supplies. Throw away or recycle anything you no longer need and organize your items into separate drawers.

Add flowers or plants
Bring some natural beauty to your desk with an arrangement of pretty flowers for a pop of color. Greenery can also brighten up your space, plus, some plants clean the air around you. The snake plant, for instance, filters out formaldehyde that's found in common personal care products.

Hang photos
Select pictures of your friends and family to hang up at your desk. Stick to three or four pictures, and make sure they're all work appropriate. Whether the photos are in frames or hung up via thumbtacks on the wall, these images are a wonderful way to put your work in perspective when things start to get stressful.

Bond with a furry friend
Many offices are starting to allow pets because of the amazing benefits these four-legged friends bring. Pets lower levels of cortisol in the body, a hormone that's associated with stress. Instead, the feel-good hormone serotonin is released to boost your mood. If your office allows pets, consider bringing your cat or dog to work one day to keep you company at your desk.

Stock up on bright office supplies
Give your desk a little color with vibrant or patterned staplers, pens, folders, thank you cards, etc. This is a simple way to give your space character and take it from boring to fun.

Put up quotes
When you're having a bad day or you're a little stressed out, looking at your favorite inspiring or motivational quote can give you just enough drive to get through the rest of your day. Print out a quote or a poem and hang it on the bulletin board above your desk, or frame a photo of your favorite and place it where you'll always see it.
