Sure, you probably get a couple of birthday cards each year and have plenty of holiday cards in storage. The truth is that although there are definitely times when sending a card is a necessity, there’s really no wrong time to send one either. Here are six unique reasons to send a greeting card.

1. Cheer up
Is your friend having some bad luck lately? Maybe he or she didn’t get a particular job or promotion. While a phone call or text message saying “I’m sorry” might help, a greeting card will do so much more. Send your friend a little something in the mail. Inside the card, list all of the qualities you love about him or her. Your friend will most definitely be grateful for the pick me up.

2. Thinking of you
Although each and every one of us is busy throughout the day, that doesn’t mean the people in our life don’t cross our mind. Maybe you saw a billboard that reminded you of your friend or heard a song that had your mom’s name written all over it. Well, inform them! Send that person a card saying what made you think about him or her. It will mean so much more than telling him or her in person, because he or she will actually have something physical expressing the sentiment.

Who knows, your recipient could receive it on a day that wasn’t going so well, and it could totally brighten his or her day. On the other hand, you could be making an already happy person even happier!

3. Death of a pet
It’s tradition to send flowers or a card when someone passes away, and the same should go for a pet. Animals become members of our family, and when one passes away, it can be incredibly sad. Sending a sweet card could help comfort your friend throughout the grieving process.

Do you have any photos of this pet throughout the years? Look back through pictures to see if you can find one to add to the card.

4. To a baby
When a baby is born, many people send cards to parents, congratulating them. And while this is definitely something you should do, send one to the baby as well! Although the little one won’t be able to read it for some years, it’s a great way to explain to him or her your excitement that he or she has entered into the world. Tell the baby your hopes and dreams for him or her, and say that you always want to be there. Down the road, he or she just might thank you.

5. For letting you borrow something
Have you ever borrowed an item from a friend and forgot about it? Well, return it with a card. Tell him or her how sorry you are for keeping it so long, and thank him or her for letting you use it.

6. Thank your parents
As you’ve grown older, you’ve probably realized how great your parents are. So send them a card to express how grateful you are for them.
