When to send a thank you note

Greeting cards are a great way to express gratitude for numerous occasions. Although it sounds like a simple formality, most people forget to do it. Sending a personalized message can make someone’s day. Here are some occasions that you should send a thank you note:

After a job interview
In today’s age, emails are the go-to mode when contacting someone. Although it’s quick and easy to type something and then press send, a handwritten note can make you stand out from the competition. Regardless of how the interview happened – in person, over the phone or on Skype – you should take the time to send a thank you note. Make sure your writing is neat, legible and grammatically correct. Tell your interviewer that it was nice to meet them, thank them for their time and that you look forward to hearing from them in the future. It only takes a couple of minutes, but putting forth that extra effort could be the deciding factor between you and another candidate.

After condolence notes or gifts
Grieving is an extremely difficult time, and the support given during bereavement can really help. Proper and traditional funeral etiquette requires you to send thank you notes to attendees. Through a handwritten message, you can communicate your appreciation for anyone who provided support during your time of need. Here are some examples of people to send thank you notes to after a service:

  • Those who sent flowers, gifts or donations.
  • Those who participated in the service.
  • Those who prepared a meal, ran an errand or offered support in your time of need.

After a wedding
Sending personalized thank you cards after a wedding may seem daunting depending on your wedding size, but it doesn’t have to be. When you’re opening wedding gifts, be sure to mark down what each person or family member gifted you. That way, you can include how you’ll use the gift in your letter. Often times, the couple who gets married isn’t able to spend much time with their guests. Instead, show you gratitude with a handwritten message. Your guests will love the personalization. Pro tip: A general rule of thumb is to send a thank you note within two months of receiving a wedding gift, but the sooner the better.

After a surgery or sickness
If you’ve ever had a surgery or spent some time in a hospital, you know how nice it is when people send things. A greeting card is a great way to say thank you.
