Quite a few people don’t realize how directly what they eat relates to the amount of energy they have to tackle the day’s tasks. Digging into candy bars and cup after cup of coffee might keep you going, but it’s not the kind of sustainable energy that will help you be productive. Support your office staff by providing healthy snacks to promote productivity in the workplace. Here are a few to stash in the break room:
Tea
It’s been long debated whether coffee is good or bad for you, but tea has been accepted as a healthy alternative for many years. Green and black varieties offer caffeine just like their bean-involved cousin, but the caffeine is not released all at once like in a cup of joe. Instead, tea releases caffeine slowly, which causes less of a high and then drop of energy. We’ve all had that 2 p.m. slump and know it’s not helpful for getting through conference calls and in-person meetings. Keep some unsweetened tea in your office – green and black are the best – to provide your employees with a healthier alternative to coffee. Plus, green tea offers antioxidants, which can boost immune systems and reduce that dreaded officewide cold.
Yogurt
Many yogurts available are full of sugar and sweeteners. Look for low-fat versions with no fruit in the bottom as that is often where the sugars come into play. Yogurt is great for digestion and goes well with protein (for added fiber and long-lasting energy). Add a handful of fresh berries for flavor and you’ve got a super healthy, tasty snack!
Fruit
Many people crave sweets and turn to chocolate and other treats to satiate their hunger. Offer fruit in your office fridge and your employees will thank you. They can quell their sweet tooth with cantaloupe, grapes, apples and more without the sugar high and crash that comes with artificial sweeteners. Plus, fruits are full of healthy vitamins that are good for your skin, hair, eyes, fingernails and bodily functioning. (Hint: Fruit also makes a great gift to pair with birthday cards for clients or client recognition gifts like thank-you cards. The recipients will send their thanks for your thoughtful card and the healthy-yet-tasty gift.)
Water
Did you know that being dehydrated can make you tired? You may not even feel thirsty, but your body requires plenty of H2O to keep you going. Make sure the tap water in the break room is tasty by adding a filter to the sink, or placing a pitcher in the fridge. Add a logo to some reusable water bottles and give them to each member of your company as a welcome or holiday gift. Everyone will be healthier, happier and more productive because of it!
Granola bars
There is a plethora of tasty “power” and granola bars on the market today. Look for ones with whole grains, dried fruit and low sugar content so your staff reaps the benefits of healthy bars. Just be sure you take into account any dietary restrictions like people who are gluten-intolerant or vegan. Everyone should be able to enjoy a break room snack!
